Orchids

Orchids are perhaps the largest flower family in the world. Containing between 25,000 and 30,000 species, they can be found all over the world.

Most orchids can be grown in gardens and greenhouses simply by reproducing conditions found within their native environments.

Orchids require the same basic needs of most plants. One of those requirements is exposure to light. These plants require a specific amount of light in order to thrive and bloom. An easy way to measure the amount of light exposure an orchid needs is by monitoring its foliage. Its leaves should remain light green. Too much sun will result in dark spots or a complete change to a dark green color. Lack of light exposure will result in the yellowing and browning of the leaves.

Orchids also require water. The amount of water needed varies according to species. The general rule of thumb is that most orchids can tolerate being under watered instead of being over watered. Most species of orchids grow on trees or plants and receive most of their moisture from the air. As a result, they should not be allowed to stand in water since they do not do so within their natural habitats. The amount of water required depends on several factors including species, size of its pot, level of dryness and wind exposure.

Orchids should be kept within certain temperature, humidity and air flow levels. Generally, they are comfortable within a temperature range of 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the daytime and 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit during nighttime hours.

Most species also require 60 to 80 percent humidity. Humidifiers or humidity trays can be used to keep levels constant. Within their natural environment, orchids experience constant breezes. Therefore, it is important to maintain constant air flow. This can be achieved by using fans.

Orchids are epiphytes, or air plants. They do not grow in the soil; therefore, they should not be planted in regular potting soil. Instead, they require potting material which will provide support and aid in maintaining moisture. Common potting material includes peat moss, fir bark chips, coconut fiber, coconut chips, granular charcoal and cork.

Orchids are beautiful plants encompassing a wide spectrum of diversity. They are found on every continent, excluding Antarctica, and are the main source for vanilla. Whether used for decoration or flavoring, these flowers can be a gorgeous addition to any home or garden.
