Tropical perennials are types of tender perennials. Tropical perennials live more than three years, but cannot withstand winter temperatures or frosts. These plants originate from tropic or subtropical regions. Their exotic appearance is used to brighten any garden.

Tropical perennials are available in many different varieties. They come in a myriad of colors, shapes and sizes. The most popular tropical perennials are the butterfly ginger, golden shrimp plant, angelonia and Philippine violet.

The butterfly ginger is a tropical perennial native to India. Its stalk grows between three to seven feet tall. The butterfly ginger is characterized by its flowers which resemble butterflies. This tropical perennial comes in a variety of colors, including white, pink, yellow, orange, red and salmon. Its leaves are pointed and lance-shaped. This plant produces an attractive fragrance.

The golden shrimp plant is a tropical perennial whose flowers resemble shrimp; hence, its name. This plant hails from Peru and can grow up to 60 centimeters in height. It is considered a flowering shrub and is characterized by its erect yellow floral spikes.

The angelonia is another tropical perennial. This plant is native to both Mexico and the West Indies. The angelonia is characterized by its small snap dragon-like flowers, which come in colors ranging from blue and purple to white and pink. This tropical perennial grows between 12 and 18 inches tall.

Another popular tropical perennial is the Philippine violet. Despite its name, this plant actually is native to India. It is characterized by its dark green foliage and dark blue trumpet-shaped flowers. This plant grows between 36 and 48 inches in height and also is considered a perennial shrub.

Because tropical perennials are native to tropical regions, it is important to reproduce their native conditions in order to ensure their survival. These plants cannot withstand cold temperatures and require specific amounts of shade and sunlight. It is important to research and ask local nurseries or plant experts for advice on sunlight and water requirements.

If properly cared for, these plants add a beautiful exotic contrast to any garden whether indoors and outdoors.
