Bamboo is more than just a plant panda bears eat.

It is a tropical grass which comes in more than 1,200 varieties. It can grow anywhere from 30 centimeters to taller than 100 feet. Bamboo is an adaptable plant capable of growing in a variety of climates, which makes it perfect for planting and growing both indoors and outdoors.

Bamboo is classified according to its roots. Generally, there are two types: clumping and running bamboo. The roots of clumping bamboo are short and expand slowly forming clumps. Running bamboo roots are long and can expand quite far from the plant. Clumping bamboo is considered a tropical variety while running bamboo is a subtropical or temperate variety.

Running and clumping bamboo require different methods of containment. Efforts must be taken to effectively contain running bamboo because its root system expands over distances. The roots can be contained by either surrounding them with a plastic barrier or by cutting roots that expand beyond the desired area. Running bamboo grown in containers can be maintained by moving the plant to a larger container or by carefully removing one-third of its roots. Because clumping bamboo expands slowly across short distances, it does not require any containment method or frequent repotting.

Although different containment methods are used, both types can be cared for the same way. Bamboo has the ability to grow with different climates, but it also requires specific care. This is especially true for bamboo grown indoors. Attention must be paid to the amount and type of light, water, soil, humidity and fertilizer the plant receives.

Bamboo grows best with either a few hours of exposure to direct sunlight or constant exposure to indirect natural light. It also requires high moisture levels which can be maintained by using a humidifier or misting daily. The plants should be watered in small amounts and the water should reach all the way to the roots. Soil should be rich and moist. It also is beneficial to the plant's health to rotate it from indoors to outdoors when the weather allows.

Bamboos are beautiful and graceful plants. They provide a serene atmosphere to any landscape. If properly cared for, this exotic grass is a great addition to any garden, greenhouse or home.
