Rainforests cover only 6% of the globe and contain 2/3 of the world's plant species. Its climate is typically very hot and humid and experiences large amounts of rainfall. Rainforests can be found in Central America, the Amazon, Africa, Southern Asia, and Australia.
Rainforest plants are numerous and very diverse. Its ecosystem has resulted in the development of a variety of plants with unique characteristics. Some well known species of rainforest plants include bromeliads, epiphytes, mangroves, lianas, and carnivorous plants.
Bromeliads are rainforest plants that are related to the pineapple family. These plants contain stiff wide leaves which allow them to retain several gallons of water. They are also important to the rainforest because they house several different animal and insect species including frogs, snails, salamanders, beetles, and spiders.
Epiphytes are probably the most recognizable rainforest plant. They are often referred to as air plants because they grow on the trunks or branches of other trees and plants. The most familiar type is the orchid. Other types of epiphytes are lichens, mosses, and ferns.
Two other common rainforest plants are mangroves and lianas. Mangroves are often called trees on stilts because of their aerial roots. Mangroves grow along the water's edge and have roots that rise above ground to keep the trunk and leaves dry. Lianas are a type of climbing vine that comes in a variety of shapes and lengths. These rainforest plants grow along the forest floor and wrap themselves around surrounding trees in order to reach the sunlight at the canopy.
Carnivorous flowers are perhaps the most notorious of the rainforest plants. These plants digest insects and some even small mammals and reptiles. They usually grow bright attractive flowers to attract prey which they then capture, kill, and digest. The most popular is the Venus flytrap and the Pitcher plant.
Many rainforest plants can be grown in greenhouses, gardens, and indoors if their native conditions can be reproduced. Many of these plants are available at local nurseries or can be ordered online. Reproducing rainforest climate requires warm temperatures, constant humidity, air flow, and moisture. Other factors such as level of light, watering, and soil depend on the type of rainforest plant.
Rainforest plants are beautiful, exotic, and unique. They make a great addition to gardens, greenhouses, and home interiors. Investing in rainforest plants is well worth the cost and effort if only to experience a small part of the tropics.
